Kayonna Evans is a sophomore at Delaware State University who resides in Newark, Delaware. She is pursuing a degree in Biological Sciences with the goal of becoming a dentist. As the youngest of three children on her mother’s side and the middle child of six on her father’s side, family has played an important role in shaping her character and perspective.
Kayonna’s passion for dentistry grew from a personal experience. As a child, she fell and chipped her front tooth. Combined with a thumb-sucking habit, this resulted in an open bite, overbite, and crooked teeth. She endured years of bullying and name-calling from classmates and siblings. Rather than allowing those experiences to define her, Kayonna used them to inspire her desire to pursue dentistry and help others feel confident about their smiles.
After graduating from Delaware State University, Kayonna plans to attend dental school, complete a residency, and eventually open her own practice. She hopes to provide the guidance, encouragement, and compassionate care she is currently seeking to other young adults.
As a young Black woman pursuing higher education, Kayonna recognizes the financial challenges associated with college. Receiving the PCW Excellence in Education Scholarship would help ease the financial burden of tuition and allow her to remain focused on her academic goals and excellence.
Kayonna also hopes to give back through free dental and oral health events, toiletries for families in need, and a charitable organization serving low-income communities. Her vision is to create a safe and supportive environment where people feel empowered to seek care. Through dentistry, she hopes to build a legacy of compassion, confidence, and service that extends far beyond the dental chair.
